Food Science and Health
This B.Sc. programme in Food Science and Health prepares graduates for careers in Ireland’s largest industry. About 40,000 people are employed in the food industry which generates an annual gross output of approximately €15.6 billion. The Government has targeted the food sector as being of great strategic importance, capable of generating considerably more wealth and employment. Since there is a direct link between diet and health, consumers are becoming more health conscious and are demanding higher quality foods that maintain health and prevent disease. This Food Science and Health degree programme has been developed to meet these needs among consumers, the food industry, academic and research organisations.
Bachelor of Science (Education) in Biology and Chemistry or Physics or Agricultural Science
The B.Sc. (Education) in Biological and Chemistry or Physics or Agricultural Science degree can trace its origins back to the teacher education Diploma in General and Rural Science established by the Department of Education in the 1930s. The aim of the programme is to educate teachers of science for second-level schools. While most graduates enter the teaching profession either at home or abroad, significant numbers enter other areas of work.
When you graduate from the programme in four years time, your qualification will enable you to teach biology and chemistry or physics or agricultural science to honours Leaving Certificate level and science to Junior level. Through the programme, you will also have acquired scientific, communication and analytical skill that will give you the flexibility to consider other job or postgraduate opportunities also.
As a teacher, you will be part of a highly regarded profession with its own professional body, The Teaching Council. It is a statutory body, established in 2006 to promote teaching as a profession and to regulate standards in the profession and in teacher education courses.
Bachelor of Science Biological and Chemical Sciences –Common Entry
This course will provide the knowledge to understand how living things work, evolve and function at the molecular or cellular level. LM123 opens up career opportunities that can make a practical contribution to helping address the challenges that presently face the world, for example, the discovery of new drugs to fight disease, inventing new materials for biomedical devices, developing greener systems to protect the quality of our environment.
Science requires a fundamental understanding of the key areas of biology and chemistry and the LM123 Biological and Chemical Sciences at the University of Limerick offers prospective students an opportunity to develop a core competency in both scientific areas in their first year at University. Entrants joining UL through the LM123 Biological and Chemical Sciences programme will subsequently have an opportunity to advance their studies in one of four specialised degree programmes, (normally 1st year in LM123 and subsequently years 2-4 in one of the following programmes following a selection process based on UL performance).
A. B.Sc. in Industrial Biochemistry
B. B.Sc. in Environmental Sciences
C. B.Sc. in Pharmaceutical and Industrial Chemistry
D. B.Sc. in Bioscience
